Les McCann Sings

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Les McCann Sings · Les McCann is best known as a pianist, but on this 1961 album for the Pacific Jazz label he is also the centre of attention as a singer. He plays piano and sings twelve songs, from Sweet Georgia Brown and Bye Bye Blackbird to On the Street Where You Live. The bassist Herbie Lewis and the drummer Ron Jefferson form the rhythm section. On some of the tracks a large ensemble joins in, with trumpets, trombones, saxophones and sometimes strings, arranged and conducted by Gerald Wilson. On Next Spring we hear, among others, the saxophonist Ben Webster and the organist Richard Groove Holmes.

The AllMusic reviewer called the record a super-good set of soul jazz and blues at their best.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Next Spring and notice the tenor saxophone of Ben Webster, who plays only on this track, together with organ and guitar.
