My December
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After the success of Breakaway in 2004, Kelly Clarkson began on new songs during her tour. She wrote about sixty songs, a process she called free therapy, after a gruelling tour and a broken relationship. With producer David Kahne she made My December, which came out on 22 June 2007 on RCA Records. The album took on a darker, more personal tone, with Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill as inspiration.
Clive Davis, the head of Sony BMG, reportedly wanted major changes, because he missed a sure radio hit. Clarkson refused to alter the songs. The record sounds like alternative rock, hard rock and pop rock, with influences of blues, country and soul. Never Again became the best-known single and reached number eight on the American Hot 100. Irvine is about the day she cancelled a meeting with fans through exhaustion. Critics praised her courage and her songs, although some found the execution uneven.
