Breakaway

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Breakaway is Kelly Clarkson's second album and was released on 30 November 2004 on RCA Records. After her debut Thankful, critics continued to see her mainly as the winner of American Idol. She therefore sought out new writers and producers, including Dr. Luke, Max Martin, John Shanks, Kara DioGuardi and the former Evanescence members Ben Moody and David Hodges. She co-wrote about half of the album herself. It became a pop record with rock and soul, unlike the more R&B-oriented debut.

Since U Been Gone, Behind These Hazel Eyes, Because of You, Walk Away and Breakaway became hits worldwide. Breakaway was originally written for Avril Lavigne's debut and appeared on the soundtrack of The Princess Diaries 2. The album won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. In the United States it reached number three and was certified six times platinum. According to Billboard, the singer helped shape the uptempo, dance-oriented pop sound of the 2000s.
