Because of You

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Because of You · After the success of his debut, Ne-Yo went back into the studio in 2007, with many of the same collaborators: Ron Neff-U Feemster, Stargate and Shea Taylor. New names joined them, such as The Heavyweights, Eric Hudson and Knobody. Plans to work with Timbaland fell through because of schedules. The working title was Know Me, but a month before release the album was named after the first single: the singer wanted to express his thanks to the people who inspire him.

The guests are Jay-Z on Crazy and Jennifer Hudson on Leaving Tonight. The songs are mostly about love and longing, sometimes soft and restrained, sometimes with more tempo. Reviewers thought the album a step forward from the debut. It topped the American album chart and won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
