In My Own Words

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In My Own Words · Before he sang himself, Ne-Yo wrote songs for others. His breakthrough came in 2004 with Let Me Love You, a worldwide hit for Mario. He then signed with Def Jam and made his debut album, which was released in February 2006. He worked with Ron Neff-U Feemster, Shea Taylor and the Norwegian production duo Stargate, among others, and wrote the lyrics of all the songs himself.

The sound is smooth, understated R&B with a nod here and there to the soul of the 1970s and 1980s. Stay introduced the singer to the public, but So Sick, a quiet song by Stargate, became the big hit. Critics were mostly positive and noted how focused the album was for a debut with so many producers. It received a Grammy nomination and entered at number one in the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to So Sick and notice how calm the rhythm stays while the vocals are about a broken relationship. Observe how little the production needs to carry that feeling.
