Ellingtonia '56

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ellingtonia '56 was recorded in 1956 by alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges and released on the Norgran label. The saxophonist had played in Duke Ellington's orchestra for years, and for this record he brought members of that orchestra into the studio. Billy Strayhorn plays piano, Jimmy Woode bass and Sam Woodyard drums. On some of the tracks the trumpeters Cat Anderson, Willie Cook and Clark Terry and the trombonists Quentin Jackson, John Sanders and Britt Woodman also play.

Almost all the pieces come from the leader himself or from people in the orchestra's circle. Strayhorn wrote Snibor and wrote Hi'Ya together with the saxophonist. Anderson wrote Night Walk and The Happy One. AllMusic gave the record three stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Texas Blues, at almost twelve minutes the longest track. Notice how the alto saxophone is given room.
