The Big Sound
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Big Sound was recorded in 1957 by Johnny Hodges, who played in Duke Ellington's orchestra, and was released on Verve. Many members of Ellington's orchestra play on the record, including Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Ray Nance and Billy Strayhorn on piano. Some of the pieces come from trumpeter Cat Anderson, others from the saxophonist himself, Mercer Ellington, Strayhorn and Terry.
It is not a record by Ellington himself, but the band sounds like an established unit rather than a loose studio orchestra. Bob Rusch wrote in his review for AllMusic that the orchestra, with its solid backing and an occasional solo, contributed to the beautiful pieces for the saxophonist. He called it great work by Hodges and fine work by Ellington. Little Rabbit Blues lasts almost ten minutes.
