Duke's in Bed · In 1956 alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges recorded this album for the Verve label. He had men from Duke Ellington's orchestra around him, among them trumpeters Clark Terry and Ray Nance, trombonist Quentin Jackson and baritone saxophonist Harry Carney. All the arrangements were written by Billy Strayhorn, who also plays piano.
The record consists of nine tracks, partly by Hodges himself and partly by Ellington and Strayhorn. Besides the title song there are well-known pieces such as Black and Tan Fantasy, Just Squeeze Me and Take the "a" Train, which at well over eight minutes is the longest track. Nance also plays violin and sings along. AllMusic gave the album three stars.
