Creamy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Creamy · Alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges recorded this album in 1955 for the Norgran label. He plays it with men from Duke Ellington's orchestra, the ensemble with which he made his name. Among them are Clark Terry, Lawrence Brown, Harry Carney and Sonny Greer, and Billy Strayhorn is at the piano.

The record is above all a relaxed session. The first side consists of a ballad medley of over a quarter of an hour, with old standards such as Whispering, Tenderly, Prelude to a Kiss and Polka Dots and Moonbeams. Then come longer pieces such as Scufflin, Honey Bunny and No Use Kicking, and two compositions by Strayhorn, Passion and Pretty Little Girl. AllMusic's review gave four out of five stars and felt that there are no surprises on it, but that the album is worth buying.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tenderly and notice how the alto saxophone lets the melody unfold unhurriedly, with the band softly around it.
