Inner Urge

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Inner Urge was recorded on 30 November 1964 at Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs and released on Blue Note in 1966. It is the fourth record Joe Henderson made as a leader. He played with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones, who were both in John Coltrane's quartet at the time, and with bassist Bob Cranshaw.

The title song, now a jazz standard, is about the anger and frustration of life in New York, according to Henderson. Isotope is a tribute to Thelonious Monk and his musical humour. El Barrio refers to his bond with Spanish music. The critic Norman Weinstein calls it his most emotionally urgent album, and The Penguin Guide to Jazz describes the music as dark and intense. Guitarist Alex Skolnick counts the record among his favourites.
