In ’n Out

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In ’n Out · In 'n Out is the third album by jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson, released on the Blue Note label. It was recorded on 10 April 1964. The tenor saxophonist plays with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. He wrote most of the pieces himself; Short Story and Brown's Town are by Dorham. The opening track In 'N Out runs to well over ten minutes and is the longest piece on the record.

AllMusic reviewer Scott Yanow writes that the leader can make a routine bop pattern sound complicated and the most complicated free improvisation sound logical. In his view the music still sounds fresh after thirty years. The Penguin Guide to Jazz observes that the temperature seems lower than on the saxophonist's other Blue Note records, but calls it fascinating, deep music.
