Page One

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Page One is the debut album of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, recorded and released in 1963 by Blue Note Records. He plays in a quintet with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Pete La Roca. The pieces were written by the leader or by Dorham. Tyner is credited on the cover as ETC., because he was then under contract to the rival Impulse! Records.

Two pieces became jazz standards: Recorda Me by the saxophonist and Blue Bossa by Dorham. AllMusic calls it an exceptionally strong and historic record, and All About Jazz still counts it among his most acclaimed albums. PopMatters feels it has the cautious air of a leader's first session.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Blue Bossa, which became a jazz standard, and notice the difference in tone between the trumpet and the tenor saxophone.
