Silver 'n Brass

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Silver 'n Brass · The pianist Horace Silver released this album in 1975 on Blue Note. He played with the trumpeter Tom Harrell, the tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, the bassists Ron Carter and Bob Cranshaw and the drummers Al Foster and Bernard Purdie. The recordings took place in January 1975 at A&R Studios in New York. A brass section was then added at Wally Heider Sound Studio III in Los Angeles, including Buddy Collette and Jerome Richardson. Wade Marcus wrote the arrangements.

There are tributes to Tadd Dameron in Dameron's Dance and to Duke Ellington in The Sophisticated Hippie. Even so, according to Scott Yanow of Allmusic the music is unmistakably that of the pianist: funky hard bop. He gave the album three stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dameron's Dance and notice how the added brass makes the small group sound bigger.
