In Pursuit of the 27th Man
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In Pursuit of the 27th Man is a studio album by Horace Silver, released by Blue Note in 1973. The recordings were made on 6 October and 10 November 1972. The pianist plays together with the vibraphonist David Friedman, the trumpeter Randy Brecker and the tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, with Bob Cranshaw on electric bass and Mickey Roker on drums. The line-up varies from session to session: we hear the Brecker brothers on three tracks, Friedman on four.
Scott Yanow gave the album four stars at AllMusic. He found the sound highly unusual for a record by this pianist, but the style remains, in his view, unmistakable: driving, melodic hard bop with a generous dose of funky soul.
