Silver 'N Wood

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Silver 'N Wood · The pianist Horace Silver recorded this album on 7 November 1975 at A&R Studios in New York, with the trumpeter Tom Harrell, the tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, the bassist Ron Carter and the drummer Al Foster. On 2 and 3 January 1976 a brass section was added in Los Angeles, under the direction of Wade Marcus. Those playing in it included Buddy Collette, Jerome Richardson, Lanny Morgan, Jack Nimitz, Garnett Brown and Frank Rosolino. The album was released on Blue Note.

The record consists of two long suites of four parts each, The Tranquilizer Suite and The Process Of Creation Suite, each taking up an entire side. Scott Yanow of Allmusic did not find the suites very memorable, but praised the strong solos and called the music typical hard bop. He gave the album three stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Keep On Gettin' Up, the first part of The Tranquilizer Suite, and notice the solos above the added brass.
