Then Play On
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Then Play On · On this third album from 1969, Danny Kirwan plays for the first time, and it was the last with Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer hardly took part. Where the first two records were strict electric blues, the band now sought more variety: folk rock, hard rock, art rock and psychedelia. For the first time editing and overdubbing were used extensively. Green gave half of the writing to Kirwan. Underway, Searching for Madge and Fighting for Madge were assembled by Green from hours of studio jams. The title comes from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. It was also the first release on Reprise Records.
The album reached number six on the British chart, the group's fourth consecutive album in the top twenty. Bonus tracks such as Oh Well were added later.
