Mr. Wonderful
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Mr. Wonderful · The British blues group's second album was released in August 1968. It was much like the debut, but was recorded live in the studio, with amplifiers in front of microphones, a horn section and Christine Perfect of Chicken Shack on keyboards. Producer Mike Vernon put screens between the instruments to prevent spill. In total the recording took four days. Peter Green's tracks were recorded in one day, Stop Messin' Round in five takes. Jeremy Spencer sang six of his own songs and let the horns play freely. Four tracks open with the same Elmore James riff. The title came from a conversation in a restaurant about presenters who gush over their guests. Two earlier ideas, A Good Length and Udder Sucker, were rejected by the label.
After the great success of the debut, the reception was mixed. One reviewer called the blues sounds deep and exciting, but later the album was mostly called a disappointment.
