Construction Time Again
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Construction Time Again is Depeche Mode's third studio album and was released on 22 August 1983 on Mute Records. Alan Wilder took part as a band member for the first time and wrote two songs. For the first time the band did not record at Blackwing Studios but at The Garden, John Foxx's studio in London, with Gareth Jones as engineer. Mixing took place at Hansa Studios in West Berlin.
Martin Gore wrote the songs quickly, after travels on which the poverty in Thailand had shocked the band. Together with Daniel Miller the group switched from analogue synthesizers to sampling. They recorded found sounds: metal they struck with sledgehammers, kitchen utensils and objects from building sites. This gave the pop music an industrial edge, partly because of Gore's interest in Einstürzende Neubauten. The album title comes from a line in the song Pipeline.
