A Broken Frame

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Broken Frame · At the end of 1981 Vince Clarke, the main writer, left the group to form Yazoo. The remaining three, Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher and Dave Gahan, carried on at Blackwing Studios with the producer Daniel Miller. Gore wrote the album entirely alone, partly with songs from his teenage years. The first song, See You, reached number six in England. Alan Wilder joined as a touring musician, but did not yet play on the record. The sound is varied: light pop songs such as A Photograph of You and more mature work such as The Sun and the Rainfall. Leave in Silence is darker and more experimental. For the first time the band used samples, such as marching boots in Shouldn't Have Done That.

The album reached number eight in England. Three singles made the top twenty.
