The Wild, the Innocent & The E Street Shuffle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Wild, the Innocent & The E Street Shuffle · That same year Bruce Springsteen had already released his debut, which was well received but sold little. For this second album he recorded with the E Street Band at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York. The sessions ran from May to 23 September 1973. At the end two more songs were added, Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) and the new Incident on 57th Street, which were recorded from scratch. The album was released in November 1973, with virtually no advertising or launch.

The music leaves the folk influences of the debut behind and sounds like a mixture of nostalgic rock 'n' roll and soulful R&B, with long, vivid songs. It initially sold poorly, but critics were full of praise, and in the region around New York Springsteen became a local phenomenon. Until 1985, Rosalita was the song with which the band most often closed its concerts. After Born to Run, several songs grew into favourites on radio and in concert.

Listening

Listening tip. In Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), listen to how the band builds the song, and notice the energy a concert closer needs.
