Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.

Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. · Bruce Springsteen recorded his debut from June to October 1972 at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York. His first manager Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos produced the album in that cheap studio in order to save as much as possible of Columbia's advance. There was a row over the approach, and the compromise was a mix of five band tracks and five solo tracks. When label president Clive Davis rejected the album because it had no hit on it, Springsteen quickly wrote Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night. That is how the album came out in January 1973.

The singles did not chart and sales remained average, but the critics were positive. Lester Bangs praised the bold new writer with his overloaded lyrics and rhyme schemes. Others heard in the record the folk rock of Bob Dylan, combined with accessible melodies and elaborate arrangements. Rolling Stone later placed it on its list of the best debut albums.
