From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Born to Run · After the commercial disappointments of his first two albums, Springsteen was given one more chance by Columbia. He recorded at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York, from January 1974, with the E Street Band, manager Mike Appel and later also Jon Landau as co-producer. He wanted to approach Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. He worked on the title track alone for six months. It ended up with 72 tracks, squeezed onto a sixteen-channel mixing desk. During the recording, Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg joined the band.
The songs are about people who feel trapped and dream of escape, with highways and travel as imagery. Singles were Born to Run and Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out. Critics praised the stories and the music, although some found the production too heavy. The album was the breakthrough and in 2003 was added to the National Recording Registry.
