Darkness on the Edge of Town
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Darkness on the Edge of Town · After the breakthrough album Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen came into conflict with his manager Mike Appel. In July 1976 he brought a lawsuit, and as a result he could not work in the studio for almost a year. He toured with the E Street Band and wrote dozens of new songs along the way. A settlement followed on 28 May 1977. Four days later he began recording with Jon Landau at Atlantic Studios in New York, a process that later moved to the Record Plant.
Springsteen drew inspiration from the novels of John Steinbeck, the films of John Ford, punk and country. The Wall of Sound of its predecessor gave way to rawer hard rock in which the whole band counts. The characters are older than before and fight against overwhelming odds. The record reached number five in the United States and is later regarded as one of his best.
