Debut

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the break-up of the Sugarcubes, Björk moved to London. The guitar rock of her previous group felt outdated, and the city's club culture showed her that house music was modern pop music. Many songs she had written years earlier, such as Human Behaviour. She first worked with Graham Massey of 808 State and with jazz musicians, but ultimately chose the producer Nellee Hooper. By early 1993 Debut was finished.

The album mixes electronic pop, house, jazz and trip hop. It sounds different from the grunge and Britpop of the time. On Aeroplane and The Anchor Song saxophonists can be heard, led by Oliver Lake, and Like Someone in Love is a jazz standard. British critics were full of praise, American reviews mixed. The album sold better than expected and remained her best-selling record in the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Anchor Song and notice the saxophones that carry the song. Can you hear how the voice is placed among those horns?
