Behaviour

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Behaviour is Pet Shop Boys' fourth album and was released on 22 October 1990 on Parlophone. The duo were not satisfied with the digital synthesizers and samples then available and wanted to use analogue equipment. Harold Faltermeyer, an expert on analogue synthesizers, therefore became the producer. Recording began in April 1990 at his Red Deer studio in Munich and lasted ten weeks. Violator by Depeche Mode, released earlier that year, gave an extra spur.

The album sounds different from Introspective and Very: more reflective and more musical, with the influence of guitar ballads. Guitarist Johnny Marr plays on it, including in My October Symphony, a song about the decline of the Soviet Union. Lowe later said that they had wanted to make an upbeat album and ended up with the opposite. Tennant said there is sadness in it, because sad songs are more interesting to write.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My October Symphony and notice the guitar alongside the synthesizers. Can you hear how the song stays soft and reflective?
