The Lion King: The Gift

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Lion King: The Gift · This album accompanies the 2019 Disney remake of The Lion King. Beyoncé produced and compiled it. She herself called it sonic cinema: new songs, inspired by the story of the film. Because the film is set in Africa, she worked with African producers and artists, including Wizkid, Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage. Between the songs are short interludes that follow the storyline.

The music mixes R&B, pop, hip hop, gqom and afrobeats. Brown Skin Girl won an award at the Soul Train Music Awards. Critics were mostly positive. AllMusic spoke of an Afro-pop hybrid, and The Guardian wrote that the album gave afrobeats a large new audience. Several reviewers felt that the record works best if you forget the film.

Listening tip. Listen to Brown Skin Girl and notice how well the song stands on its own, even without the film.
