True Confessions

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

True Confessions is the third studio album by Bananarama and was released on 30 June 1986 on London Records. Most of it was produced by Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, who had also made the group's first two records. For the first time the group worked with Stock Aitken Waterman, who produced two tracks, including the cover of Venus by Shocking Blue.

The two SAW tracks are dance-oriented. The rest of the album leans towards rock-oriented, serious pop, with lyrics about relationship problems, drugs and a generation that has lost its illusions. There are also two ballads, including the jazzy Dance with a Stranger. Venus became a number 1 on the American Hot 100. Reviews varied: Smash Hits called it a real pop album, while Record Mirror found it no revelation.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Venus and notice how a song from 1969 here becomes a dance track by Stock Aitken Waterman. Hear what the vocals and the beat do.
