He studied music at the University of Durham and conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London, with, among others, Colin Metters, George Hurst and Colin Davis. He was the first conducting student to gain the DipRAM, the academy's highest diploma for performers. In 1998 he won a prize at the Lloyds Bank BBC Young Musicians Conductors Workshop and became assistant conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, later associate conductor.

Music and breakthrough

He then led orchestras in Europe. From 2002 to 2010 he was principal conductor and music director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, from 2009 of NorrlandsOperan in Sweden, from 2011 of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and from 2022 of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra. He conducted at English National Opera and in 2011 led the world premiere of Two Boys by Nico Muhly. In 2014 he conducted all nine of Beethoven's symphonies in Umeå, each preceded by a new work.

Influence

Gamba made more than fifty CDs for Chandos, including the series on film music. With the BBC Philharmonic he recorded works by Miklós Rózsa, Richard Addinsell, Malcolm Arnold, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Ralph Vaughan Williams. In this way he contributed to the recognition of film music as orchestral repertoire.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a recording of film music by Gamba with the BBC Philharmonic, for example by Korngold. Notice how the orchestra tells a scene with sound alone.
