Rumon Gamba

Rumon Gamba werd in 1972 geboren en is een Britse dirigent. Hij studeerde muziek aan de universiteit van Durham en dirigeren aan de Royal Academy of Music in Londen, bij onder meer Colin Metters, George Hurst en Colin Davis. Hij was de eerste dirigeerstudent die het DipRAM haalde, het hoogste diploma voor uitvoerders van de academie. In 1998 won hij een prijs bij de Lloyds Bank BBC Young Musicians Conductors Workshop en werd hij assistent-dirigent van het BBC Philharmonic, later associate conductor.

Muziek en doorbraak

Daarna leidde hij orkesten in Europa. Van 2002 tot 2010 was hij chef-dirigent en muziekdirecteur van het IJslands Symfonieorkest, vanaf 2009 van NorrlandsOperan in Zweden, vanaf 2011 van het Aalborg Symphony Orchestra en vanaf 2022 van het Oulu Symphony Orchestra. Hij dirigeerde bij de English National Opera en leidde in 2011 de wereldpremière van Two Boys van Nico Muhly. In 2014 dirigeerde hij in Umeå alle negen symfonieën van Beethoven, elk voorafgegaan door een nieuw werk.

Invloed

Gamba maakte meer dan vijftig cd's voor Chandos, waaronder de reeks over filmmuziek. Met het BBC Philharmonic nam hij werk op van Miklós Rózsa, Richard Addinsell, Malcolm Arnold, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold en Ralph Vaughan Williams. Zo droeg hij bij aan de erkenning van filmmuziek als orkestrepertoire.
