Miklós Rózsa

Miklós Rózsa werd in 1907 in Boedapest geboren en studeerde in Leipzig. Hij bleef zijn hele leven ook concertmuziek schrijven en nam Hongaarse volksmuziek mee in zijn stijl. Via Londen, waar hij werkte voor producent Alexander Korda, kwam hij met The Thief of Bagdad (1940) naar Hollywood. In de jaren veertig bepaalde hij de klank van de film noir, met harde, scherpe akkoorden in Double Indemnity (1944) en The Killers (1946). Voor Spellbound (1945) gebruikte hij de theremin, een elektronisch instrument, voor de verwarde geest van de hoofdpersoon, en won hij een Oscar. Later schreef hij muziek voor monumentale historische films, zoals Ben-Hur (1959), dat hem zijn derde Oscar opleverde.
