Bernard Herrmann

Bernard Herrmann werd in 1911 in New York geboren en werkte eerst voor de radio, onder meer met Orson Welles. Met Welles maakte hij zijn filmdebuut in Citizen Kane (1941). Herrmann hield niet van lange melodieën. Hij bouwde zijn muziek uit korte motieven, die hij herhaalde en verschoof. Per film koos hij een ongewone bezetting: twee theremins in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), alleen strijkers in Psycho (1960). Met Alfred Hitchcock werkte hij aan onder meer Vertigo (1958) en Psycho. De gillende strijkers van de douchescène zijn wereldberoemd. Zijn laatste score, voor Taxi Driver (1976), met een zwoele altsaxofoon, voltooide hij vlak voor zijn dood.

Bernard Herrmann bouwde zijn muziek uit korte cellen in plaats van lange melodieën, componisten met een moderne opleiding brachten twaalftoonstechniek en clusters naar de studio, en de regisseurs van New Hollywood gebruikten muziek spaarzamer.
