Erich Wolfgang Korngold

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Erich Wolfgang Korngold was born in Brno in 1897 and grew up in Vienna. As a child he was already considered a prodigy, and his opera Die tote Stadt (1920) became an international success. In 1934 the director Max Reinhardt brought him to Hollywood. After the Anschluss in 1938 he stayed there. For Warner Bros. Korngold wrote scores like operas without singing, with the rich harmonies of Strauss and Puccini. Captain Blood (1935) and The Sea Hawk (1940) are swashbuckling pirate adventures. Anthony Adverse (1936) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) were awarded an Oscar. The main theme of Kings Row (1942) is often cited as an example for the style of John Williams.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the swashbuckling brass fanfares and the broad string melody: the orchestra sings as in an opera, while the action simply carries on.
