Peter Kruder

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Peter Kruder was born in Vienna in 1967 and is an Austrian producer and DJ. Together with Richard Dorfmeister he forms the duo Kruder & Dorfmeister, and they founded the label G-Stone Recordings. Since the G-Stoned EP of 1994, Kruder has made a wide range of productions. The duo released DJ-Kicks: Kruder & Dorfmeister (1996) and The K&D Sessions (1998), which are regarded as groundbreaking for electronic music.

Music and breakthrough

The sound that emerged from them is called downtempo. It showed that electronic music does not have to be cold and metallic, but can also sound sensual and full of soul. Both releases became bestsellers worldwide, and The K&D Sessions sold more than a million copies. The album is considered one of the most influential of the 1990s.

Influence

Apart from the duo, Kruder made solo work. His debut album Peace Orchestra appeared in 1999, with soul, hip hop, jazz and dub. He remixed Bebel Gilberto, among others, and in 2001 started the project Voom:Voom with Fauna Flash, a new reading of Detroit techno and deep house. He also produced for Marsmobil, Urbs and the album Teufelswerk by DJ Hell. In 2010 Kruder & Dorfmeister and G-Stone celebrated their sixteenth anniversary, with the compilation Sixteen F**kin Years of G-Stone Recordings and the live tour K&D Sessions Live.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a track from The K&D Sessions. Notice the calm beat, the warm sounds and the atmosphere that set downtempo apart from hard dance music.
