Richard Dorfmeister
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Richard Dorfmeister is one half of Kruder & Dorfmeister, an Austrian duo that became known for downtempo and trip hop, above all with remixes of pop, hip hop and drum and bass. The other half is Peter Kruder. The duo took its name from its two members.
In 1993 their first EP appeared, G-Stoned, with the hypnotic track High Noon. The sleeve resembled that of the album Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel. The record received good reviews especially in the United Kingdom, and Gilles Peterson was the first to play the track on his BBC programme Worldwide. The duo also had a label of its own, G-Stone Recordings.
In 2007 Nokia asked the duo to make a series of ringtones and sounds for the luxury phones Nokia 8800 Arte and Sapphire Arte. In 2010 the duo and the label celebrated their sixteenth anniversary with the compilation Sixteen F**king Years Of G-Stone Recordings and the live series K&D Sessions Live. Visual artist Fritz Fitzke and the MCs Earl Zinger and MC Ras T-Weed also took part in it. With performances at, among others, The Big Chill and the Berlin Festival, the live show grew into a world tour.
The duo's work shows that a remix can be an art form in its own right: an existing track is given a new, slow and atmospheric sound, and so becomes something new.
