Per Gessle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Per Gessle was born in 1959 and is a Swedish singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is best known as the male half and main songwriter of the pop duo Roxette, which he founded in 1986 with Marie Fredriksson and which ceased to exist after her death in 2019. Before that he had success in Sweden as the frontman of Gyllene Tider, a group he co-founded in 1976. That group quickly became popular, but after the disappointing fourth album The Heartland Café from 1984 it broke up.

Music and breakthrough

Roxette broke through internationally at the end of the 1980s and the start of the 1990s, with the albums Look Sharp! (1988) and Joyride (1991). The duo topped the American chart four times, above all with It Must Have Been Love, which was heard in the film Pretty Woman.

Influence

Besides his work with Roxette and Gyllene Tider, Gessle made many solo albums, in Swedish and in English. His first solo album Per Gessle appeared in 1982, followed by Scener in 1985. After Fredriksson's illness he released Mazarin (2003), a success with critics and public, and then Son of a Plumber (2005), En händig man (2007) and Party Crasher (2008). Later came En vacker natt, En vacker dag and Small Town Talk. Under the pseudonym Mono Mind he released the album Mind Control in 2019.
