Joyride

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Joyride is the third studio album by the Swedish pop duo Roxette. It was released on 25 March 1991, as the follow-up to Look Sharp! and to the single It Must Have Been Love from the film Pretty Woman. Recording took eleven months. Per Gessle began with demos in Halmstad in February 1990, after which Marie Fredriksson joined in and recording continued in Stockholm with producer Clarence Öfwerman.

The record company pressed for a move to Los Angeles and for American producers, but the duo chose their own Swedish musicians. Gessle wrote almost thirty songs and wanted the album to sound like a collection of hits. Fredriksson wrote the music for the ballad Watercolors in the Rain. The title song became the first number one in Sweden. The album topped the chart in seven European countries. AllMusic called it the work of two pop artists at the top of their form.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Watercolors in the Rain and notice how this quiet song, with more folk music in it, differs from the hit singles.
