Liam Gallagher

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Liam Gallagher is an English singer, born in Manchester in 1972, the youngest son of Irish immigrants. He grew up in the Burnage district and shared a bedroom with his older brother Noel. As a boy he cared more about sport than music, but as a teenager he fell under the spell of The Beatles, above all John Lennon, and of The Stone Roses, The Kinks, The Jam and T. Rex. A Stone Roses concert in 1988 changed his life, according to him. He never set foot inside an art school; he got a few qualifications at school and worked for a time at the tax office.

Music and breakthrough

In 1991 he became the singer of the Manchester band The Rain, which soon became Oasis. Noel joined as guitarist and songwriter. In 1993 the group signed to Creation Records. The debut Definitely Maybe (1994) became the fastest-selling debut album in British history, and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) became one of the best-selling British albums ever. Be Here Now (1997) sold more than 400,000 copies on its first day. Together with Blur, Oasis became the face of Britpop, and the rivalry between the two bands filled the newspapers. In 2009 Oasis broke up after a quarrel between the brothers. Liam carried on with Beady Eye and later as a solo artist, with As You Were (2017), among others.

Influence

Gallagher is known for his nasal voice with drawn-out vowels, his stance at the microphone and his big mouth. He sang Noel's songs with a swagger that made Oasis a band of their own for many working-class young people.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Live Forever by Oasis and notice Liam Gallagher's voice: nasal, with long drawn-out vowels at the end of the lines. Hear how he rises above the wall of guitars without ever shouting.
