Be Here Now

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Be Here Now · After the worldwide successes of Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, everyone was waiting for the third Oasis album. Noel Gallagher wrote most of the songs during a stay on the island of Mustique. The recording took place in various London studios, including Abbey Road, and at Ridge Farm Studio in Surrey. According to co-producer Owen Morris there was a lot of bickering and the band members took drugs. The management restricted the media's access to the album, which turned the press against the band.

The songs are longer than before and contain many guitar overdubs, because Noel wanted the record to sound as colossal as possible. The album became the fastest-selling in British chart history, with D'You Know What I Mean? and All Around the World as number-one singles. First reviews were positive, but later critics called the record bloated and overproduced. Some journalists see its release as the end of Britpop.

Listening

Listening tip. In D'You Know What I Mean?, listen to the thick layer of guitars: try to hear how many parts sound over one another at the same time.
