(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? · After Definitely Maybe, Oasis recorded the second album in 1995 in Wales, including at Rockfield Studios. Producers were Owen Morris and guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher. Drummer Alan White had just replaced Tony McCarroll. According to Morris the recording was finished in about fifteen days, one song a day. Paul Weller played on Champagne Supernova.

The sound is more spacious than on the debut: more ballads, big choruses and strings, as in Don't Look Back in Anger. Wonderwall is one of the four big hits in England. The prelude was the Battle of Britpop, the chart fight between Roll with It and Blur with Country House. The first reviews were lukewarm, but the verdict turned completely around in the months and years that followed. The record is now regarded as a milestone of Britpop and of the 1990s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Don't Look Back in Anger. Notice how the piano opens the song and how the chorus gets all the space, with a guitar solo you can simply sing along to.
