Definitely Maybe
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Definitely Maybe is the debut album of Oasis, released in 1994 by Creation Records. The recording began in January at Monnow Valley Studio with producer Dave Batchelor, but it sounded thin and too clean. Only Slide Away survived from those sessions. Batchelor was sacked and the band re-recorded everything at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, where Noel Gallagher produced himself and added many guitars. That too remained unsatisfactory. Then the manager brought in Owen Morris, who mixed the album and compressed the guitars heavily.
The result sounds raw and full of attacking guitars. Noel wrote all the songs, including Supersonic, Live Forever and Rock 'n' Roll Star. In the United Kingdom the album went straight to number one and was at the time the fastest-selling debut ever. Critics praised the optimistic tone, a counterweight to the gloom of grunge. It is regarded as a cornerstone of Britpop.
