Standing on the Shoulder of Giants
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Standing on the Shoulder of Giants · After the tour for Be Here Now, the band took a long break for the first time. Noel Gallagher gave up cocaine and wanted a drug-free studio. That led to tension, and during the recording in France, Bonehead and Guigsy left. Their parts were afterwards re-recorded, because Noel played almost all the instruments himself. Producer Owen Morris made way for Mark Stent, and the album was released on the new label Big Brother Recordings. The title is a misquoted remark by Isaac Newton that Noel read on a two-pound coin.
The sound shifts from Britpop to psychedelia with drum loops, samples, electric sitar, Mellotron and reversed guitars. Gas Panic! has trip hop sounds, and with Little James, Liam Gallagher co-wrote a song for the first time.
