Laidback Luke
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Laidback Luke is the pseudonym of Lucas van Scheppingen, born in 1976 in Manila to a Dutch father and a Filipino mother. He grew up in Hoofddorp. As a teenager he was introduced to club music at a school party, learned to sample with an Amiga computer and bought a synthesizer. His models were Chicago house and the hard techno from Europe. The Dutch DJ Dobre helped him to his first record deal when he was eighteen.
Music and breakthrough
In the mid-1990s he began releasing records under the name Laidback Luke. His first album Psyched Up appeared in 1998, followed by Electronic Satisfaction in 2002 and the mix album Windmill Skill in 2003. That year he also remixed Crescendolls by Daft Punk. At the end of the 2000s he became a central figure in electro house, collaborating with Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell, the later Swedish House Mafia. His version of Robin S.'s Show Me Love, made together with Angello, reached number eleven in the British chart in 2009. He also founded the label Mixmash Records.
Influence
His sound is hard and danceable, with heavy bass lines and plenty of energy, a mix of indie taste and floor-shaking electronic music. Laidback Luke is regarded as one of the key figures in the rise of electro house and Dutch house, and as a DJ who also gave other producers a platform.
