Dutch house

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Around 2008 Dutch DJs such as Chuckie, Afrojack, Laidback Luke and Hardwell made a kind of house of their own, also called dirty Dutch, after Chuckie's parties. Dutch house has shrill, squealing synthesizer sounds, a heavy bass and Latin American rhythms in the percussion. A track builds up to a drop, the moment at which the beat and the bass burst out again. Afrojack scored in 2010 with Take Over Control, and the sound became a building block of American EDM.

Listening

Listening tip. In Take Over Control, hear the high, shrill synthesizer line and how everything briefly falls silent before the heavy bass sets in again.
