Chuckie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Chuckie is the artist name of Clyde Sergio Narain, a DJ, rapper and producer who was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, in 1978. He grew up in Suriname and was influenced by the music of that country. When one of his friends became a DJ, his own interest grew as well. From the age of thirteen he experimented with remixes at home and built up a record collection of his own. At first he played at parties for friends and family. In 1993 he started as a DJ at the club Voltage in The Hague. In 2008 he was the opening act of Sensation in the Amsterdam ArenA, something he had already dreamed about as a visitor to the first Sensation.
Music and breakthrough
Chuckie is regarded as a producer of so-called dirty trance, a movement built around lively urban club nights with dancing, bright lights and a participating crowd. The genre is characterised by high lead synths over Latin-flavoured rhythms and samples. His hits include Let the Bass Kick, Aftershock and Make Some Noise, which he made with Junxterjack. He made remixes for Michael Jackson, David Guetta, Enrique Iglesias and The Partysquad, among others, and produced for 50 Cent, Kesha and Akon. His work featured on the BBC Radio 1 show What's Hot in EDM? He has a label of his own, Dirty Dutch Music.
Influence
Chuckie's music shows how the Dutch dance scene took part in the worldwide EDM wave, with influences from Suriname and Latin America. He belongs to the generation of DJs who fused pop songs and club music into a single sound.
