Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1968. She became known as Charlene Mitchell in the Australian soap Neighbours, in which she appeared from 1986 to 1988. Through the London producing trio Stock Aitken Waterman she grew into a pop star with a career of almost forty years. Worldwide she has sold more than 80 million records.

Music and breakthrough

Her first single, Locomotion (1987), was released only in Australia and became the best-selling single of the decade there. She then travelled to London. SAW had forgotten that she was coming; while Minogue waited outside, they wrote I Should Be So Lucky in about forty minutes. The song, with synthesizers, orchestra hits and a LinnDrum drum machine, spent five weeks at number 1 in England and six weeks in Australia. Her debut album Kylie (1988) became the best-selling album by a woman in England in the 1980s. With her Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan she sang Especially for You, also an English number 1.

Influence

At the end of 1992 her contract with SAW's label expired. At Deconstruction she made the albums Kylie Minogue (1994) and Impossible Princess (1997). With Spinning Around (2000) and Can't Get You Out of My Head (2001) she returned to the dance floor. The latter song reached number one in more than forty countries. In 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to cut a tour short. Minogue showed that a star from the hit factory could grow into an artist who lasts for decades. In 2023 Tension was released.

Listening tip. I Should Be So Lucky (1987) is SAW at its simplest. Notice the thin LinnDrum drum machine, the synthesizers and the orchestra hits: short, hard blasts from a whole orchestra at once.
