Froukje

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Froukje Veenstra was born in 2001 in Nieuwkoop. She went to school in Alphen aan den Rijn and at sixteen moved to Rotterdam to study at Codarts, the conservatoire. She belongs to the generation that around 2020 first found an audience through social media and streaming, and only afterwards through radio and a record company.

Music and breakthrough

Her first song, Groter dan ik, appeared in early 2020. It began as a study assignment at the conservatoire and became a protest song about the climate crisis. Within a year it had been streamed 1.7 million times. Later that year came Ik wil dansen, her first song in the Single Top 100. In 2021 that title became a slogan at protests for the reopening of nightlife, when clubs were closed because of the coronavirus measures. Froukje writes her music with a laptop, a guitar or a keyboard, and makes synth-pop: electronic sounds with clear, personal lyrics. The EP Licht en donker (January 2021) reached second place in the album chart.

Influence

After the EP Uitzinnig (2022), her first album, Noodzakelijk verdriet, appeared in January 2024. It reached number 1 in the Netherlands and Flanders and won an Edison for best album in 2025. She also collaborated with the rapper S10. Froukje follows an old line in Dutch-language pop. Boudewijn de Groot sang a protest song about the Vietnam War in 1966. She sings in her own language about the future of the planet, for an audience her own age.

Listening

Listening tip. Groter dan ik began as a study assignment. Listen to the lyrics: Froukje sings in the first person about the feeling that the climate crisis is too big for one person. Set it beside Welterusten mijnheer de president by Boudewijn de Groot: the same kind of protest, but personal rather than addressed to a person in power.
