Anita Doth
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Anita Doth is actually called Anita Daniëlle Dels. She was born in Amsterdam in 1971, the daughter of a Surinamese father and a Dutch mother. She always wanted to sing and dance, but when fame still failed to arrive at nineteen, she took an administrative job with the police. In her spare time she performed with a girl rap group, the Trouble Sisters.
Music and breakthrough
The rapper Ray Slijngaard asked her to sing a chorus for a demo. That demo went to the Belgian producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde, and so 2 Unlimited was born in 1991. The first single was Get Ready for This. Then came Twilight Zone, Workaholic, The Real Thing, Tribal Dance and No Limit, among others. Doth sang the choruses, Slijngaard rapped the verses. That was new: instrumental rave music from the clubs thus acquired two recognisable faces and a chorus to sing along to. After four albums the duo split up in 1996.
Influence
Doth then presented on TMF, worked as a DJ at Radio 538 and in 2000 released the solo album Reality. From 2009 she was back on stage with Slijngaard, first as Ray & Anita, later again as 2 Unlimited. In 2016 she left the group for good. Her clear voice is inseparably linked with the Eurodance of the early 1990s.
