Phil Wilde

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Phil Wilde, really Filip De Wilde, is a Belgian producer and DJ, born in Antwerp in 1967. He began in the 1980s as a DJ at the TOP studio in Ghent and made his first recordings under names such as Uniform and, with Patrick De Meyer, T99. In 1989 he produced Laat je gaan by Petra & Co, which reached number 1 and went gold.

Music and breakthrough

In Antwerp he met Jean-Paul De Coster. Together they made the single Don't Miss the Party Line under the name Bizz Nizz, which reached the top 10 in England. In May 1991 they built the instrumental Get Ready for This in their studio, to which they wanted to add rap. The Dutch rapper Ray Slijngaard added vocals and also brought in the singer Anita Doth: this is how 2 Unlimited came into being. In Belgium the group signed with Byte Records, which licensed the records to labels in other countries, such as PWL Continental in England. In 1993 No Limit became a worldwide hit. Wilde and De Coster devised and built the music; Ray and Anita gave the project a face.

Influence

After 2 Unlimited, Wilde carried on producing and remixing, for Kate Ryan, among others, whose Désenchantée was number 1 in Belgium, and even for Kabouter Plop. In 2009 he helped the original singers of 2 Unlimited with the music for their reunion shows. His career shows how Eurodance worked in the 1990s: the producers stayed in the background while others stood on stage.

Listening

Listening tip. In Get Ready for This, listen to the hard, fast synthesizer riff that opens the track and keeps coming back. Notice how little singing there is: the track revolves around the beat and the riff, with only short shouts and a few lines of rap.
