Ali Farka Touré

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ali Farka Touré grew up in Niafunké on the River Niger. Because his noble caste was not allowed to make music, as a boy he secretly built a one-stringed instrument, and later he learned the guitar. His hypnotic guitar patterns reminded Western listeners of John Lee Hooker, although he insisted that it was not blues. With Ry Cooder he made Talking Timbuktu (1994), which won a Grammy.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Diaraby and hear how the guitar keeps repeating the same short pattern, with small variations, as in early blues.
