The Source

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Source by Ali Farka Touré was released on World Circuit in 1992. He sings on almost all the tracks and plays electric and acoustic guitar. On the opening track Goye Kur he also plays the n'jarka. Many guests play on it: Afel Bocoum sings, Hamma Sankare plays calabash, Oumar Touré congas, Nitin Sawhney tabla on Inchana Massina and Taj Mahal acoustic guitar on Roucky and Mahini Me.

The album topped the Billboard World Albums chart. The Los Angeles Times called Cinquante Six, an instrumental solo picking piece, one of the most impressive moments. There he lays a melody with a flamenco colour over a cleanly picked folk rhythm. Trouser Press wrote that the record challenges the singer to go beyond the blues, as in Hawa Dolo, and to play more complicated lines with just a few notes, as in Roucky.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cinquante Six, an instrumental piece for guitar alone, and notice how a picked folk rhythm is overlaid with a melody with a flamenco colour.
